Sustainability

Future solutions should be rooted in a sustainable practise

Sustainability Development Goals

Rooted in the principles of sustainable development, Biomend has incorporated the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since its inception. We directly address the following objectives: Goal 6, "Clean Water and Sanitation"; Goal 7, "Affordable and Clean Energy"; Goal 8, "Decent Work and Economic Growth"; Goal 9, "Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure"; Goal 12, "Responsible Consumption and Production"; Goal 13, "Climate Action"; and Goal 14, "Life Below Water".

SDG 6 “Clean Water and Sanitation”

Biomend contributes to SDG 6, specifically target 6.3, by offering the wastewater industry a solution that targets an extensive range of pollutants. This solution not only increases the proportion of domestic wastewater treated safely but also ensures superior ambient water quality.

  • The management of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) using Biomend's PurePlant leads to a 50% reduction in pollution from PPCP, EDC, microplastics, and PFAS in the emission streams of wastewater treatment plants.

  • This approach directly aligns with the primary objective of target 6.3: to reduce pollution, minimize the release of hazardous chemicals, and enhance the reuse of resources from wastewater.

SDG 7 “Affordable and Clean Energy”

Biomend aids in achieving SDG 7, specifically target 7.2, by introducing a renewable raw material supply chain for biogas production to the energy sector, thus enhancing the proportion of renewable energy.

  • Utilizing biomass harvested from Biomend's PurePlant as feedstock for biogas plants facilitates the conversion of wastewater from 100,000 residents into energy sufficient for 15,000 residents.

  • This strategy effectively aligns with target 7.2's primary objective of increasing the renewable energy share in the global energy mix.

SDG 8 “Decent Work and Economic Growth”

Biomend actively contributes to SDG 8, specifically target 8.4, by recycling nutrients from wastewater for use in the agricultural sector, consequently increasing the production of sustainable and renewable fertilizers.

  • By using biomass derived from Biomend's PurePlant as biogas plant feedstock, the byproduct of the gasification process provides valuable nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus to the agriculture sector. This vital link effectively closes an important loop in the food system and reduces greenhouse gas emissions from synthetic nitrogen production and open-pit mining of the critical raw material phosphorus.

  • Harvesting biomass generated from the wastewater of 100,000 residents can recycle over 1,000 tons of nitrogen and 150 tons of phosphorus back into society. This is equivalent to supplying fertilizers for 55 average-sized farms, encompassing 4,000 hectares of farmland.

  • This strategy directly aligns with the primary objective of target 8.4, which seeks to enhance resource efficiency and decouple economic growth from environmental degradation.

SDG 9 “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure”

Biomend is contributing to SDG 9, specifically target 9.4, by offering the wastewater industry a method to eliminate nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from their wastewater treatment processes, thereby reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.

  • The utilization of Biomend's PurePlant for wastewater treatment completely eradicates nitrous oxide emissions, as our process relies on the absorption of nitrogen rather than gasification.

  • Harvesting biomass generated from the wastewater of 100,000 residents can mitigate nitrous oxide emissions equivalent to 4,650 tons of CO2e. This is approximately 50% of the total emissions from a modern wastewater treatment plant.

  • This strategy directly aligns with the primary objective of target 9.4, which aims to retrofit the wastewater industry with sustainable solutions using environmentally sound processes.

SDG 12 “Responsible Consumption and Production”

Biomend is actively contributing to SDG 12, specifically targets 12.2, 12.4, and 12.5, by providing the wastewater industry with a comprehensive solution that minimizes the use of virgin raw materials, manages hazardous waste, and recycles valuable resources.

  • By employing Biomend's PurePlant to produce biomass from the wastewater of 100,000 residents, the wastewater industry can recycle 1,000 tons of nitrogen and 150 tons of phosphorus (target 12.5). This process substitutes the use of synthetically produced nitrogen and the virgin critical raw material phosphorus (target 12.2), which are typically used as fertilizers in agriculture. Additionally, since PurePlant relies on absorption processes, it manages hazardous waste such as PPCP, EDC, Microplastics, and PFAS (target 12.4), resulting in a 50% reduction in pollutant emissions.

  • This strategy directly aligns with the overarching objectives of targets 12.2, 12.4, and 12.5, which aim to promote sustainable and efficient use of natural resources, ensure environmentally sound management of chemicals, and significantly reduce waste generation through nutrient recycling from wastewater.

SDG 13 “Climate Action”

Biomend is actively contributing to SDG 13, specifically target 13.2, by eliminating nitrous oxide emissions from wastewater treatment processes and simultaneously capturing carbon through photosynthesis. Consequently, we provide the energy sector with a sustainably produced, renewable feedstock for biogas plants and substitute synthetically produced fertilizers, which implicates large greenhouse gas emissions.

  • By using Biomend's PurePlant to generate biomass from the wastewater of 100,000 residents, we not only eliminate nitrous oxide emissions equivalent to 4,650 tons of CO2e but also capture 25,000 tons of CO2. Moreover, we supply the energy sector with feedstock for biogas production sufficient for 5,000 households and substitute synthetic nitrogen production, thus mitigating an additional 2,160 tons of CO2e.

  • This strategy directly aligns with the overarching objectives of target 13.2, which encourages the integration of climate change measures into industry strategies and planning.

SDG 14 “Life Below Water”

Biomend is actively contributing to SDG 14, specifically targets 14.1, 14.2, and 14.3, by decreasing nutrient emissions from wastewater using ecosystem-based approaches that also affect ocean acidity.

  • By employing Biomend's PurePlan for wastewater treatment, we can reduce emissions from wastewater treatment plants by 10%. This improvement leads to an enhancement in local coastal marine quality and a reduction in ocean acidity through an ecosystem-based approach. It's important to note that both coastal marine quality and ocean acidification are significantly impacted by eutrophication.

  • This strategy directly aligns with the overarching objectives of targets 14.1, 14.2, and 14.3, which aim to reduce marine pollution from land-based activities, strengthen marine and coastal ecosystems, and minimize ocean acidification.
